Who Needs Dental Crowns?

Crowns protect the underlying tooth if it has been damaged. Some conditions that we’d recommend a crown for include:

  • After a root canal
  • Broken tooth
  • If a tooth has large fillings or cracks
  • Worn tooth

A crown can also be recommended for aesthetic reasons, or to anchor a bridge. We’ll let you know if you need a crown, and we’ll explain the process to you and schedule your treatments.

The Process

Getting a crown is a two-visit procedure. On your first visit, we’ll prepare the tooth under a local anaesthetic, take impressions to create a mould and, in some cases, place a temporary crown. Your moulds will be used to create your permanent crown. At your second appointment, we will place your permanent crown.

As with all our services, we are committed to ensuring a comfortable experience and will make sure that you are numb and comfortable before we proceed.

FAQs

How long do crowns last?

With proper oral hygiene, crowns have a 95% success rate over ten years. Heavy grinding will shorten the life of your crown, so if this is an issue for you, we’ll recommend a splint to protect your dental restorations.

What are crowns made of?

Most crowns are made of porcelain. However, crowns may also be made of gold. We’ll be happy to discuss your options with you.

Can crowns be whitened?

Whitening products do not lighten crowns.
